Beneath the Tears: Embracing Childhood Sensitivity Through Meditation

I was a highly emotional child, shedding tears seemingly “for no reason” on a frequent basis.


“Deann is SOOOOO emotional” and “Don’t upset Deann” became familiar refrains — not only at family gatherings, but in neighborhoods, parks, stores, and practically anywhere with more than two people present. Most observers, including those outside my immediate family, interpreted my emotional responses as fragility, overreaction, or even manipulation. To some extent, I suspect those assumptions quietly existed within my family as well.


What others could not see was how deeply I felt everything. Emotions did not simply pass through me — they landed, lingered, and sometimes hurt physically. As a child, I had no language to explain this inner experience. In an effort to reduce discomfort for those around me, I eventually discovered I could shut myself down emotionally altogether. That coping strategy, however, came at a cost, eventually manifesting as stomach issues and internal distress.


Both of my parents recognized what was happening because they had lived similar empathic experiences themselves. Rather than dismiss my sensitivity, they understood the importance of teaching me how to work with it. Their guidance was simple, consistent, and foundational: Know Thyself.


I needed to learn how to identify what was truly mine, release what was not, establish energetic boundaries, and regularly ground, center, and shield myself. These practices were not framed as spiritual abstractions — they were practical tools for navigating life.


Childhood Sensitivity Meditation: Supporting Emotional Awareness Early

By the time I was three years old, my parents had already begun teaching me meditation practices and chakra awareness. These early techniques were designed to calm my nervous system, offer clarity, and help me regulate emotional overwhelm. I learned deep breathing, visualization, and how to connect with steadier internal states.


This early exposure to childhood sensitivity meditation gave me practical ways to calm my body, understand my emotions, and remain connected to myself without shutting down.


Even now, decades later, those early lessons remain vivid. When I close my eyes to meditate, I still hear my father’s steady baritone guiding my breath. I still feel my mother’s gentle presence asking, “What’s that sound?” — a grounding cue that helped me return to myself when emotions surged.


Through meditation and embodied awareness, I developed a toolkit that allowed me not only to function in the world, but to contribute meaningfully to it. Sensitivity did not disappear — it became something I could work with rather than be overwhelmed by.


In response to these experiences, I’ve created a small collection of free mini-courses focused on meditation, energetic self-care, and chakra awareness. These offerings explore the science behind meditation, the energetic role of chakras, and practical ways to integrate grounding and mindfulness into everyday life — especially for sensitive, empathic individuals.
